Following on from the success of their Holy Week and Easter devotional videos, The Society and the Church Union have worked together on four new devotional videos on the following themes:

1. Our Lady to be released at 7pm on Sunday 24 May to mark Mary's month of May and to complement the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham's National Pilgrimage at Home initiative, whose live streaming commences at 11.45am on Monday 25 May.

2. Pentecost to be released at 8am on Sunday 31 May to mark the feast of that name and to renew our lives with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

3. Praying for the Dead to be released at 8pm on Thursday 4 June to support all those mourning the death of loved ones, including those grieving at this time of the coronavirus pandemic.

4. Corpus Christi to be released at 7pm on Wednesday 10 June to mark the eve of the feast of that name and to deepen our devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.

The videos aim, in part, to fill a spiritual gap left by the closure of churches for public worship and, for most of the faithful, private prayer. In making the videos, the lockdown rules in place at the time of filming were followed in full. The lockdown rules, and their associated health guidance, prevented most of the bishops of The Society from contributing to the two sets of videos. The bishops of The Society are therefore grateful to the Bishop of Fulham for taking a lead role. The Society and the Church Union would like to record their thanks to the Priest Administrator of the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham for the use of the Shrine Church for filming and to the Vicar and the Churchwardens of St Benet Fink, Tottenham, for the use of that church building for filming.

The videos will be made available at the times listed above via The Society Facebook Page.  Those who use Facebook are encouraged to watch them there and to share them so that they reach as many people as possible. However, it is also intended to subsequently post the videos here, for those who don't use that platform.

This liturgical music is used in the video.

The Society under the patronage of Saint Wilfrid and Saint Hilda is delighted to learn of the appointments of Fr Will Hazlewood SSC to be the next Bishop of Lewes and of the Revd Ruth Bushyager to be the next Bishop of Horsham. This is especially welcome news as it is five and a half years since the last announcement of a traditional Catholic priest to be appointed to a Church of England bishopric; at that time it was the appointment of Fr Philip North to be the Bishop of Burnley.

The Rt Revd Tony Robinson, Chairman of The Society's Council of Bishops, commented: "I am thrilled for Will and Ruth and wish them every success and happiness in their new roles. It is wonderful to see the Church of England's Five Guiding Principles being lived out in this way. We have been acutely conscious of the lapse in time since the last appointment of a traditional Catholic priest to the episcopate and so Will's appointment is both welcome and timely. We do of course hold Will and Ruth in our prayers, along with their families, and indeed the entire Diocese of Chichester under Bishop Martin."

National Missioner to the Society of St Wilfrid and St Hilda

(One full-time or two half-time posts, lay or ordained, flexible location)

This new post, generously funded for two years by a grant from the Archbishops’ Council, is a unique opportunity for a passionate person, lay or ordained, to equip the 424 Parishes of the Society of St Wilfrid and St Hilda in recovering and encouraging a Catholic vision for evangelism.

Overseen by the Bishop of Burnley and supported by a national steering group, you will work closely with the Council of Bishops of The Society and the Council of Forward in Faith to promote a confident mission agenda and support local churches in prioritising growth. In particular you will:

  • Oversee a bold launch of the Society Mission Strategy, ‘Forming Missionary Disciples’ and prepare resources to support parishes in responding to it.

  • Develop a vision for a movement of missionary disciples by pioneering a Rule of Life for lay Christians that will support them in living out their faith in their daily lives.

  • Call together and facilitate groups of priests to enable them to grow in confidence and seek fresh joy in developing the life of the local church.

  • Build collaborative networks with the Church House Evangelism and Discipleship Team, the four part-time diocese-based catholic missioners and other groups, organisations and resource providers.

  • Explore a proposal to identify key, strategic parishes in different regions of the country that may become ‘centres of excellence’ in catholic evangelism.

It is an occupational requirement that the postholder(s) will be an Anglican in the catholic tradition in sympathy with the aims of the Society of St Wilfrid and St Hilda and, if ordained, will be a priest or deacon of The Society. They will have the ability to enthuse and inspire both clergy and laity across the country and have experience of church growth.

This post can be filled on a full-time basis either by a priest or distinctive deacon (with accommodation and a parish base available) or a layperson (salary to be negotiated). Alternatively, the role can be shared by two people, lay or ordained, each working on a half-time basis. The missioner(s) will be employed by an appropriate Diocesan Board of Finance.

The Job Description and Person Specification are available here.

For more information and to express an interest, please contact Bishop Philip North, the Bishop of Burnley ( for an informal conversation.

If you know anyone who may be suited to this role, please contact the Bishop of Burnley.

Closing date: 27th March 2020
