The Society echoes the sentiments expressed by the Diocese of Leeds in its statement announcing the retirement of the Right Reverend Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield, after over 20 years' service as a bishop in the Church. In addition, we wish to pay tribute to the unstinting support Bishop Tony has given to the Catholic Movement over many years, serving as Chairman of The Society's Council of Bishops and of Forward in Faith for nine years, as well as undertaking a variety of other roles, including two spells as Chairman of the Additional Curates Society. Bishop Tony has provided sacramental and pastoral oversight to Society parishes across all the episcopal areas in the Diocese of Leeds - not just in Wakefield - and we know that the Society clergy and parishes of that Diocese are profoundly grateful to him. The Right Reverend Jonathan Baker, Chairman of The Society's Council of Bishops, commented: "I speak for all the bishops of The Society, and indeed all its supporters, in sending our heartfelt thanks to Bishop Tony for all that he has done. His pastoral care for his clergy and people has been exemplary. We wish him a long and very happy retirement."

The Society is saddened to learn of the death of Liz Paver, who was a great servant not only of the Church of England, and its Catholic Movement, but also of the Anglican Communion. This service, expressed over very many years, to the General Synod, and more recently to the Anglican Consultative Council, led the Archbishop of Canterbury to award Liz the Cross of St Augustine in June of last year. We give thanks to God for Liz's loyal witness to the Catholic Faith as received by the Church of England and we pray that she may rest in peace. Jesu mercy, Our Lady of Walsingham pray.

After consultation with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Fr Paul Thomas SSC has been appointed as the first Bishop of Oswestry. The Society's Council of Bishops is delighted to hear this news and warmly congratulates Fr Paul.
Fr Paul, once consecrated, will provide sacramental and pastoral oversight to Society parishes in the western half of the southern province of the Church of England; in an area which is now known as the See of Oswestry and which was formerly known as the See of Ebbsfleet.
Fr Paul’s service to the Church has been rooted in parochial ministry in and around the capital and he has been the parish priest of his current church - St James, Sussex Gardens in Paddington, London which is a parish under the episcopal oversight of the Bishop of Fulham - for the last 11 years.
Fr Paul became well known during lockdown for his innovative use of social media, providing content which was both entertaining and evangelistic. He also spent a couple of years as the acting Archdeacon of Charing Cross in recent years which will provide him with invaluable experience for his new role.
Bishop Tony Robinson commented:
Fr Paul’s consecration will be on the Feast of Candlemas in Canterbury Cathedral - Thursday 2 February 2023. A time for the consecration service has yet to be announced. A novena of prayer is available below for all those who want to link themselves through prayer to the consecration and to Fr Paul’s episcopal ministry within the Church. The novena will run from Wednesday 25 January - the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul the Apostle - to Thursday 2 February - the Feast of Candlemas.
We offer The Society prayer for the parishes, clergy and people of the See of Oswestry:
Heavenly Father, bless the bishops, clergy and people of The Society. Bind us together in love and faith. Renew us in service and witness. And by your Holy Spirit Guide our future and make plain your purposes. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Saint Wilfrid, pray for us. Saint Hilda, pray for us.
